Adult Skating: A Growing Trend

In recent years, adult figure skating has seen a surge in popularity across the country. From casual skaters to aspiring competitors, people of all ages are discovering the joy and grace of this elegant sport. Maybe you’ve even seen the #AdultsSkateToo movement taking social by storm! 

At Winterhawks ICE Centers, we have always valued our adult skating community, and we are proud to be part of this growing trend. Not only does skating promote physical fitness for adults, but it also provides a mental and emotional outlet and a supportive, inclusive community of like-minded people.

To provide the best possible experience for our adult skaters, we’ve recently revamped our group lesson curriculum in the Adult Series. 

Our new program includes the following courses: 

• Adult Beginner - This course is first in the sequence for Adult Series levels. It is the equivalent of Basic 1 and 2 classes, designed to teach basic forward skating, basic backward skating, and beginning stops.

• Adult Intermediate - This second course in the series is designed to teach adults more advanced forward and backward skating, giving you more command of your skills and setting the foundation for advanced-level skills, at a pace most comfortable for you!

• Adult Advanced - This third course in the series teaches advanced turns, steps, stops, and beginning freestyle skills. Completion of this course gives the adult skater the appropriate foundation necessary for beginning freestyle skating.

• Adult Free Skate - This final course is a multi-level course that is designed for any adult skater working on any type of jump and spin. With a less rigid curriculum, the coach is able to individualize instruction for each student. 

We are pleased to offer a variety of different programming for a variety of different interests and goals. For those who might feel that they would benefit from additional one-on-one instruction or who want to enter the world of performances and skating competitions, you may consider taking private or semi-private lessons with a member of our highly qualified coaching staff. 

We are also excited to offer two advanced group programming options for adults. Our Synchronized Skating program, Rose City Synchronicity, offers a great program for adult skaters from multiple area rinks. For this season, the team will be traveling to two major competitions that will host other adult synchro teams from around the country.  We also offer advanced academy programming for our more competitive adult skaters in our Beaverton location. Both programs offer advanced and high-quality instruction while also fostering a supportive and friendly sense of community.
