There's a unique magic that fills an ice rink during a public skating session. The cheerful chatter, the laughter echoing off the walls, and the fun music playing overhead while you glide across the ice create a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere for everyone. But what exactly are these public sessions, and why do they hold such a special place in the heart of our community?
Simply put, public skating sessions are designated times when our ice rink is open to everyone, regardless of age, skill level, or background. It's an open invitation to come and enjoy the simple pleasure of gliding across the ice. Whether you're a seasoned skater looking for some leisurely exercise, a family wanting to spend quality time together, or a complete beginner taking your first tentative steps, public skating offers a fantastic opportunity to experience the joy of being on the ice.
Something for Everyone
The beauty of public skating lies in its inclusivity. You'll find a wonderful mix of people sharing the ice:

Families: It's a fantastic way for families to bond, get some exercise, and create lasting memories. From helping little ones find their balance to skating hand-in-hand with each other around the rink, it's an activity everyone can enjoy together.
Friends: Catching up with friends while enjoying a fun and active outing is a classic public skating experience.
Individuals: Whether you're seeking a peaceful solo skate for exercise and reflection or looking to meet new people who share your love for the ice, you'll find a welcoming environment.
Beginners: Public sessions are the perfect place to learn the basics in a relaxed and non-pressured setting. Don't be afraid to take it slow and enjoy the journey of discovering your skating legs!
Community Groups / Organizations: Winterhawks ICE Centers love to give back to the local community. Take advantage of fundraising opportunities provided by our facilities. When you partner with us, the more people who skate, the more money you make! To learn more, email Brock Huddleston, Senior Director of Programs (brock@winterhawksice.com)
More Than Just Skating: Building Community
Public skating sessions are more than just a recreational activity; they are vital threads in the fabric of our community. They provide a safe and accessible space for people of all ages and abilities to come together, to be active, and to connect with one another. The shared experience of gliding on the ice fosters a sense of camaraderie and belonging, strengthening the bonds within our community. The laughter and shared moments create a positive and uplifting environment that benefits everyone.
Understanding the Purpose: Creating a Positive Experience for All
To ensure that everyone can fully enjoy the unique benefits of public skating, it's helpful to understand its primary purpose. Public sessions are designed for recreational skating, family fun, and introductory practice. The open nature of these sessions allows for a diverse group of skaters to share the ice safely and comfortably.
Therefore, while we deeply value the dedication and hard work of all our ice users, public skating sessions are not the appropriate time or space for:
High-intensity training drills: These can be disruptive and potentially unsafe for other skaters who are enjoying a more leisurely pace.
Run-throughs of complex programs: The varied skill levels and flow of public sessions make it challenging and potentially hazardous to execute advanced routines. As personal music cannot be played overhead during public sessions, skaters will find it safer and more beneficial to do program run-throughs on freestyle ice.
Advanced free skating maneuvers: Any double jumps above a double toe loop, triple/quad jumps, and any open-blade maneuvers (camel spins, spirals, etc.) on public sessions cause a significant safety risk for skaters and patrons alike. These maneuvers are not permitted on public sessions at any time.
Rough housing / tag / horseplay: The safety of our skaters is our top priority. Therefore, roughhousing, tag, and horseplay are prohibited on the ice.
We have dedicated ice times ("freestyle sessions" for figure skaters; "stick and puck" sessions for hockey players) and programs specifically designed for focused training, private instruction, and program practice. Utilizing these designated slots ensures that all our ice users have the appropriate environment to pursue their individual goals safely and effectively. As you become a more advanced skater, you should begin transitioning to freestyle sessions for your training and private lesson time.
As always, the current public session schedule and a current list of public session guidelines can be found on our website.
